Re: Monsters and Myth!

KALLIKANTZAROS
Indicative to many Southeastern European Countries, The Kallikantzaros were a Race of Sub-Human creatures who lived under The Earth. These Beings are mentioned as far back as Ancient Greece (when they were responsible for maintain balance, lest The Earth ''collapse in'' on itself. Later, The Kallikantzaros took on a more ominous and evil nature (possibly due to their ''Pagan'' Nature, The early Church branded them ''demonic'').

In this role, They are evil creatures who can never count above the Number 2. The Numeral ''3'' was seen as a Holy Number (The Trinity). The mean recital by a Kallikantzaros meant immediate evaporation! They also gave off a horrible odor.

Some Cultures use them as retribution for those who ''cheat'' on their spouses. They will hunt the Offender down, jumping on their back (invisible, of course) – and scratch and claw the back of the transgressor. This ''torment'' ends when The Sun rises (although the injuries remain as a reminder of future infidelity). It is thought that The Kallikantzaros was a foundational creation ''step'' for Trolls and Goblins. They also can take on Shapeshifter abilities – and turn into dogs or cats. In this form they sneak into a Home and bring bad luck.

MERETSEGER
An Ancient Egyptian (Thebes) Goddess associated with The Cobra (Snake), Meretseger was popular during Egypt's ''New Kingdom'' Period (1,550 BC). She was The Guardian of The Necropolis (Royal Cemeteries) of Thebes. Her name translated to ''She Who Loves Silence''. Shown in Human Form, Her ''Head'' is actually the body of The Cobra. This is to impart Her ''swift and just'' punishment to those who may transgress against those buried at the sacred site.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

CAT SITH
Of Scottish Origins, The Cat Sith are linked to Fairy Creatures – that take the form of a Feline (Cat). In some variations, The Cat Sith is also associated with Human Witchcraft. They are possible related to The European tradition of Witches that use demons as their ''Helpers'' or Familiars (that both protect and serve their Human Mistress).

The Cat Sith take a similar form, as a large Black Cat (Domestic). They all have a White Spot on the chest of their fur coat. If they are Human Witches, they can only transform into a Cat a total of 9 times. This too may be a link to the traditional myth that a Feline had ''9 Lives''.

Many Scots fear The Cat Sith, stating that suck a Being steals The Souls of both The Living and Dead. This ''power'' is said to be ''passed on'' to their Mistress or Master (Warlock). As such, when Funeral Wakes were held, great efforts were taken to keep Cats away from such Ceremonies. To appease The Cat Sith, many would place a saucer of milk outside to keep The Cat Sith at bay.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

SELENE
The Principle character of the series of ''Underworld'' Films (2003 to 2016), Selene (portrayed by Kate Beckinsale) was once a Human who lived in 14th Century (AD) Hungary. As a Child, Her entire Family was murdered (as it was made to appear) by a Race of Werewolves known as ''Lycans''. In reality, The Lycan mortal Enemies, Vampires orchestrated their deaths. Their Leader, Viktor (wishing to replace His own daughter) – gave Selene the chance to avenge their deaths, by ''turning'' Her into a member of His Coven.

Selene took on the role of ''Death Dealer''. These are Vampire Guardians who protect their own kind in an eternal war against The Lycan threat. She is physically strong as a result of Her vampiric nature, an expert at weapons and small unit tactics and is somewhat of a ''Hero'' among Her People. Selene learns (through the course of The Films), the true nature of Her Human Family's death and the real reason behind The Vampire/Lycan War. The ''Underworld'' Film series was among the first (including the ''Blade'' Film Series), that portrayed Vampires in a type of ''Super-Anti Hero'' Genre.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

BARNABAS COLLINS
Although (perhaps) ''unknown'' to the current generations of ''Horror Fans'', ''Barnabas Collins'' was the first Vampire character to be shown on American Daytime Television (in ''Soap Opera'' Format), that was widely accepted. Barnabas was the principle ''Star'' of The Television Show known as ''Dark Shadows''. It aired from 1966 to 1971 (B&W and later Color), and was one of the most popular Shows on Television. It spawned merchandise, books and even two Major Motion Pictures. Barnabas was played by Canadian Actor Jonathan Frid.

Barnabas Collins was a 175-year old Vampire who ''returns'' to His ''modern'' Family (descendants) in the 1960s. Assuming the guise of the (5x Great) Grandson of the original Barnabas (His cover), He is initially obsessed with finding his ''lost love'' (reincarnated in modern times). Later, as The Series progressed, various ''Time Travel'' Plots, allow us to ''see'' just ''how'' Barnabas was cursed (as was The Collins Family). Ghosts, Possessions, Witches and of course – a Werewolf – are all eventually presented.

Dark and menacing, The Series was produced by American Television Horror Director and Writer Dan Curtis. Over 1,200 Episodes were made and while the Show always rated in the Top 15 of Daytime Shows, it was oft nominated for an Emmy Award (but never won).

Remade into a more ''modern'' scenario in a 2012 Movie, which was more ''camp'' than Gothic Horror, attempts were twice made to resurrect The Series (first in 1994 and again in 2004). Though worthy attempts, both failed to ''capture'' the original ''feel''. The entire Series can be found on DVD and Digital Download throughout The World, and is well worth the time to watch.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

ANAT
''Anat'' (and variations on Her name), was a major Goddess in The Mesopotamian Region, going back perhaps as far as 3 BC. ''She'' would be ''acquired'' by The Egyptians during their 16th Dynasty (1,650 BC). Anat was worshiped as a Goddess of War and had a rather gruesome ''History''. She is often portrayed in Human Female Form, either wielding an Axe or Club.

Anat was ''noted'' for ''slicing and hacking off'' the heads and ears of Her Enemies. She collected their ears and wore them as a belt (or girdle). Heads were displayed attached to Her Chest and Back (almost as a type of Armor). Famed Pharaoh Ramesses II made Anat His ''Patron Goddess'' in battle and built several Temples in Her honor. He even named His Chariot Horses ''Anat''.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

ATUM
An ''Old Kingdom'' (2,100 BC) God, Atum is considered to be The ''First'' God – having ''created Himself''. Is was also originally placed ''above'' Ra (who would later become the Principle Deity in Ancient Egypt. Depicted as a Man, Atum is also known as ''The Finisher of The World''. In other words, Atum could (and will) ''destroy The World'' by water (seen as the source of Life to The Ancient Egyptians).

Atum was unique in that He carried both Female and Male creation traits. He is mentioned in The funerary Text ''The Book of The Dead'', taking on the guise of a Snake. Atum would also be portrayed in other animal guises throughout His Worship Cults. Various Temple and Monuments were built in His honor.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

AUGURY
Augury was an Ancient Roman religious practice of foretelling future events by observing the flight of various species of birds. This was normally reserved for skilled Seer's (Mediums of a kind). The practice was deeply rooted in The Kingdom Period (Archaic). It was said that such a feat of Augury was responsible for the foundation (location) of The City of Rome itself.

Augury was also practiced in Ancient Greece as well – in particularly in Sparta. The supporting ritual of a Seer releasing a bird and watching it in flight, gave Him or Her the ability to determine how a War or battle would be won or loss. Even the continued Reign of a King or Emperor was often ''checked'' with Augury.

Later when the previously discussed Augurs (Specialized Priests) came into being during The Republic Period, these Men (no Women), would still use birds for forecasting events. However, these Priest adopted the name more than the ancient practice.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

MASTEMA
A Jewish legend, a Mastema was likened to The Christian ''Archangels'' and their ability to protect a believer from ''evil or harm''. They bore many similarities – to include wings by which to fly and supernatural strength. The primary difference in in several ''origin'' stories concerning The Mastema.

One version has The Mastema as ''Fallen Ones'' (Angels in disgrace). They roam The World doing evil and harm. Later, Mastema were made into God's ''Enforcers'' metting out punishment in His Name and protecting the innocent from harm. They also ''test'' Man by placing temptation in His path.

Some Christian Theologians cite the Exodus story of ''The Angel of Death'', released by God upon The Egyptians as punishment for failing to release The Hebrews from bondage. The Pharaoh cursed the first born Male Children of The Israelites. In fact, this curse (unbeknownst to Him), also included HIS Son. God sent ''The Angel'' (also called ''The Destroyer''), to kill all First Born Male Children who did not have God's ''sign'' upon the thresholds of their homes (blood). The ''Angel'' is widely seen as a Mastema.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

ANPUT
Anput was an ''Old Kingdom'' Goddess (2,600 BC) – which is most probably the feminine form of Anubis (A Guardian and Judge of The Dead in Egyptian Religion). Some Historians put form the claim that She was actually the wife of Anubis. Mostly a Lower Egypt Deity, She is shown in both a Human Female form and that of Her Husband Anubis – the head of a Jackal and the body of a Human.

Also a Funerary Deity, Anput was another of The Protectors of a Pharaohs body in The Tomb. With the unification of The Upper and Lower Kingdoms of Egypt, Anput became somewhat of a minor Deity.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

BELIAL
While The Entity known as Belial is of Hebrew (Jewish) origin, much has been said of ''His'' origins and eventual evolution into His most commonly mentioned name...The Devil. The name is associated with ''unworthiness'' ans some cite that Belial was a ''Demon'' and not necessarily Lucifer. He does have many of the same traits and as such may have been the genesis for the later Christian version.

Generally, Belial took on the main role as ''Master of Hell'' most possibly in the 19th Century AD, when such Poets and Writers as John Milton ''Paradise Lost'' and Robert Browning ''re-imagined'' Belial as Satan.

CACODEMON
Of Ancient Greek origins, The ''Cacodemon'' (often spelled Cacodaemon'' was seen as the opposite of the previous discussed Agathodemon (which were by design, Good(. As such, The Cacodemon was Evil. Often, the mental condition which would become known as Insanity (or related Mental Disorders) – were ''blamed'' on possession by a Cacodemon. Their exact creations are somewhat obscured – as most Ancient Greek Gods were associated with Nature and The Elements. Cacodemons were also used as Antagonists in Medieval Literature.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

BABI
An Ancient Egyptian ''Old Kingdom'' (2,300 BC) Deity – ''Babi'' was a Primate God (Baboon). In particular, Babi was seen as The “King of'' these primates. Babi's ''personification'' was based on the actual Ape's fierce and aggressive manner in Nature. As such, Babi was seen as as One who ''Devoured The Soul's of The Unrighteous''. Hence, Babi was viewed as an Underworld (Afterlife) God.

Babi was also portrayed as being near The Underworld's ''Lake of Fire'' (into which Evil was cast into). He was also said to be linked to The God Osiris (as His first-born Son). Babi also was associated with The ''Libido'' of The Underworld – in that even in The ''Afterlife'' sex was important. As such, Babi is often portrayed with a large Phallus with various prayers associated with The Libidos incorporated in Funerary Preparation Rituals.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

CURSE TABLETS
From Greco-Roman Culture, ''Curse Tablets'' were a form of ''Hexing'' (Cursing) by which a Person(s) name was written on a clay tablet, along with the particular ''impediment'' was was being ''wished upon'' said Victim. These tablets would be placed inside a particular Temple of a Patrol God – in hopes of compelling The Curse.

Another form, required The Tablet to be placed on or inside the grave or tomb of The Victim. This compelled His or Her Spirit to be cursed in The Underworld. In order for a Curse Tablet to ''work'' One had to pay a Seer or Witch to carve the curse. Another version was ''Love Tablets'', which compelled a Victim to fall madly in love with whomever was listed on The Tablet, via The Spell.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

EMERE
From Western Africa's Yoruba Tribe, The Emere are said to be Supernatural Beings that ''live'' in certain Human Children. They ''give'' these selected Children the power of ''Future Sight'' and the ability to bring extreme good luck to their Family. They are noted for their extremely handsome (Boy) or Beautiful (Girl) looks. However, the ''birth'' of a Male Emere IS rare.

The Emere are said to have the ability to traverse the plain between Life and Death. As such they are very useful in giving and taking ''messages'' to an from deceased loved ones. Many become Shamen with The Yoruba Tribe. Of strange note, Emere will only ''die'' when a period of ''extreme'' joy occurs to their Family (such as an important birth, etc.) In most cases, the ''Human'' side remains while the Emere ''passes''.

GALLU
From ancient Sumeria, The Gallu are Evil Spirits (Demons) that inhabit The Underworld. Their position in The Sumerian Underworld is that of ''Collector of Souls''. They ''come for'' those who are Evil or Bad who die and take their Souls to The Afterlife for ''punishment''. They are large Beings which have a Hide that is so hot, touching it would burn Human flesh. They have Ram Horns and generally have a horrible odor.

EGBERE
Another Youruba (West African) tribal Myth, The Egbere are malevolent ''Nature spirits'' that shun Human contact. They resemble a combination of Humanoid and Tree. They are referred to ''Tree People''. Yoruba Legend states that the Egbere carry with them a Sleeping Mat that is capable of producing great wealth to anyone that can steal it. However, this means hunting them in the deep jungles. Nature ''protects'' them with Wild animals and other hazards that One may find in such a Region.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

''FAIR CHARLOTTE''
A seldom told American Myth, this Story comes to us from 1843 – and involves a young girl named ''Charlotte''. The tale is generally assumed to have originated in Ohio (but versions carried to many other States).

Charlotte it seems suffered from a Heart condition which required Her to not participate in many of the ''pleasures'' of being a young woman in the 19[sup]th[/sup] Century – in particular Dancing. Wishing to meet Her ''Beau'' and participate at a well known Ball in the area, She left Her Home on a very cold night (without a coat) and traveled by carriage to the function.

The story takes several ending from The Era. One, is that Charlotte died on the way to The Ball. Her carriage Driver was unaware. Suffering a Heart Attack, her face frozen in a ghastly visage – Charlotte ''arrived'' at The Ball as a Corpse. Another has Charlotte making it to The Dance, but suffering Her Heart Attack in a Dressing Room. She was found dead.

''Charlotte'' was used as a cautionary tale dealing with health care and obeying One's Parents (or even perhaps One's Physician). The tale would give rise to a rather unusual product ''created'' as a result of The Urban(?) Legend. This was the creation of The ''Frozen Charlotte'' Doll in the 1850s..

These macabre figurines were made of China and ''marketed'' to young Girls. In the 1860s, the Tale's somewhat morbid points caused Production to wane. A small China bathtub was added to The ''Charlotte'' Doll and ''She'' was re-named ''Bathing Charlotte''. The Doll did not survive much past the 1890s.

However even this spawned an ''Urban Legend'' in and of itself. As late as the 1920s and 1930s, ''buried'' Charlotte Dolls could be found just about everywhere in Rural America. One theory is that when a Girl ''Grew Up'' – and no longer wished to ''play with Dolls'', ''Charlotte'' was buried. Some state that the practice was linked to ''finally'' burying Charlotte (who had died on the way to Her Dance).

''CHUCKY''
''Chucky'' is the Antagonist of The ''Child's Play'' franchise of American Horror Movies – which began is 1988. He is a Child's Doll (Toy) that is possessed by the Spirit of a Serial Killer. Using Black Magic to inhabit His ''new'' body, Chucky must take over the body and soul of His Owner (Child), or risk being trapped inside The Doll forever. Throughout the succession of films, He is thwarted and killed (only to be resurrected. His psychopathic Human Girlfriend is later too transformed into a Doll. The two will also ''conceive'' their own demonic offspring. ''Rebooted'' in 2019, Chucky is a classic ''Terror Figure'', standing alongside Jason Voorhees, Freddy Kruger and Michael Myers.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

ROGER LAFORGE
The 2005s ''Jolly Roger – Massacre at Cutter's Grove'' ''Monster'', Roger LaForge was a Pirate of utter disgust. Perhaps more menacing and feared than Blackbeard, in 1719 – He and His Crew attacked a Ship. LaForge brutally slaughter the Ships Passengers – Nuns and Priests. Even this was too much for His ''Salty'' Crew, who soon mutinied. They decapitated Roger and sealed His ''head'' in a Chest – throwing it overboard.

Wishing to repent for their sins, they took all of Roger's treasure and left Piracy behind – founding a small Coastal Community called ''Cutter's Grove''. Naturally, as most Horror Movies do – Roger made a deal with The Devil to return to Earth and seek His revenge against The Descendants of his mutinous Crew. A group of teenagers find a treasure chest (washed ashore on a Cutter's Grove Beach after a storm) – and open it. This releases the now ''demon Pirate'' Roger LaForge.

Hacking and slicing His way through the descendants of His Crew (and just about everyone else who gets in His way), ''Jolly Roger'' (although somewhat similar to John Carpenter's classic 1980s terror romp ''The Fog''), can be somewhat ''corny'' (Roger is a bit too much like Freddy Kruger with His humor), bit The Film is worth a few ''jumps in The Dark''.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

''THE INVISIBLE MAN''
Originally an HG Wells Sci-Fi Novel of 1897 – Universal Pictures 1933 Classic ''The Invisible Man'' served as a catalyst for many related Horror/Sci-Fi Movies. The tale centers around a Chemist who stumbles upon a formula which – if ingested by a Human, can render them invisible to others. The unbeknownst ''side effect'' of the formula is – madness. Being invisible has always been an ''odd fantasy'' used with great effect since ancient times in literature. The Universal Film gave audiences the ability to ''experience'' such.

Our Chemist, slowly going insane commits murders in His attempt to counteract the formula and regain his ''normal'' appearance. Failing, He is tracked to an abandoned Barn by Police and surrounded. The barn catches on fire and as our ''Hero'' escapes – His foot prints are seen in the snow. Police shoot him, fatally. Taken to the Hospital, as He lays dying – The Chemist slowly begin to materialize (death being the only way to counteract the formula).

The film was made famous by the initial ''reveal'' of The Chemist, swathed in bandages – wearing a Smoking Jacket. He laughs maniacally all the while ripping away the cloth to reveal – nothing. And while the ''special effects'' were primitive by today's standards – this was the first time such effects were performed, much to the ''screams'' of the 1930s audiences.

HEDORAH
Part of The Japanese ''Giant Monster'' Series, Hedorah was first seen in 1971. It was used to emphasize Man's pollution of The Planet Earth, by showing Hedorah was created from over pollution and Atomic waste. Heborah was used as an adversary to Godzilla. Capable of assuming a ''Saucer-Shape'' for flight, Heborah is a tentacled Creature, capable of producing acid as a weapon. It needs pollution to consume (survive). Although no other films other than ''Godzilla vs Hedorah'', although plans were produced.

Re: Monsters and Myth!

GAMERA
''Created'' in 1965 – Gamera was designed to augment the success of The ''Godzilla'' Films of Japan. As typical. Gamera was the ''Child'' of Atomic Testing, a mutated Giant Turtle, capable of ''flight'' by radioactive ''blasts'' which emanate from it's rear Shell/Leg openings. Gamera, unlike the original Godzilla, was ''Human Friendly'' and was often used to combat Alien Monsters hostile to Humanity. Capable of ''firing plasma'' from His Chest, Gamera has been featured in 12 Films and is currently in Reboot status.

CHORONZON
A ''Demon'' which may have evolved in the 16th Century AD, ''Choronzon'' is most likely an off-shoot of 19th Century Occultist Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a developer of the ''Dark Religion'' Thelema (a combination of many ancient religions and proscribed rites). Some assign the term ''Chaos Magic''as well. Chorozon would be similar to The Satanic ''Archdemon''. A Dweller of ''The Abyss'' ()a Netherworld were such Beings exist), He is associated with attacks against Human ego. ''Evil'' is magnified under His ''patronage''.
